Gihan Perera - Huffington Post - May 28, 2009
In cities throughout the country, the
stimulus has not been visible. It's early, but everything in the design
of the Recovery Act means that it will make little structural
difference for communities of color. Black, Latino, and Asian
inner-city communities have been in recession since at least 2004.
Whether the national economy can recover any time soon is a big
question, but no matter what happens, local urban communities will stay
in crisis for much longer.

Word From the Streets: No More Monkey Business |

Hashim Benford - South Florida Times - May 8, 2009
There is a troublesome monkey business going on in the wilds of Jungle
Island; and I’m not talking about those adorable orangutans.
I’m referring to the back flips the city is performing to finance yet
another bad deal. Since its construction on Watson Island, this theme
park, which morphed into little more than an obscure banquet hall, has
been unable to turn a profit. And now, Miami city commissioners have
voted to loan Jungle Island $800,000 in public money to help pay the
attraction’s property taxes.

How do you rig an election?
You do exactly what right-wing leaders in the Florida Legislature are
attempting - change the law to make it harder to register to vote and
have your vote counted.
Stop vote rigging now: http://progressflorida.org/page/s/dontrigelections

Word From The Streets: Marlins Madness |

Hashim Benford - South Florida Times - April 3, 2009
The deal is done, and perhaps it was inevitable.
City and county officials have committed hundreds of millions of public
dollars to build a stadium for the Miami Marlins. But we all know this
is a bad deal for the public. We put up the money from our budget to
see no return. There will be short-term jobs that will dry up after
construction, and seasonal, long-term jobs at best.
The bottom line is that our elected leaders handed over public money to
private interests, again. It’s not new for the politicians of Miami to
enable corporate greed. Neither is it new for them to claim they are
doing so in the name of low-income and working-class people.

Ms. Yvonne Stratford and Tony Romano were arrested less than an
hour ago as they left the Miami-Dade Board of County Commission
Chambers. They were peacefully leaving a hearing to demonstrate their
vote of no confidence in county leaders as they considered a bad deal
to build a new stadium for the Florida Marlins.
Take urgent action now and demand the release of Ms. Yvonne and Tony:

The process of the City and County cutting a bad deal with Marlins
officials has denied the right of residents to vote on the project from
the outset. Opposition to the deal has cut across race and class lines
and galvanized a call for democracy and opposition to corporate
bailouts at the local level in South Florida. This is a final attempt
by county officials to silence dissent.
Defend democracy, demand that there be no arrest for people exercising thier 1st Amendment rights:

Today as Ms. Yvonne and Tony walked out of the County Chambers with 40
other residents they were arrested. They are being brought to
Miami-Dade Jail to be processed. This is a blatant shutting down of
dissent.
Take action now and demand their release:
